1 April - GREAT BRITAIN V ITALY JUNIOR WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL

MARTINA DANIONI PIPS LAURA JONES BY JUST 0.20 FOR GOLD AS BECKY WING IS 3RD IN JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL

An exciting competition was in prospect as some top British Olympic hopefuls were given the opportunity to test their progress against close rivals Italy who won the bronze medal at the 2003 European Junior Championships closely followed by GB in 4th place. Three years later with many of the Junior Teams moving to Seniors and top GB Junior Becky Downie at the Commonwealth Games we were given a preview of who could claim places in the 2006 British Junior European Team for Volos, Greece, at the end of April.

Adriqn Stan, GB Women’s Technical Director said “With a number of gymnasts still at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, this Friendly International will act as a benchmark with regard to the important events ahead. By checking and analysing how these youngsters are progressing and how they compete against strong rivals, we shall have a better idea of our potential for the future”.

The GB Team in Rushmoor consisted of three 13 year-old -gymnasts Laura Jones and Jordan Lipton from Notts Gym Club and Rebecca Wing from Heathrow G.C, and three 14-year-olds Abigail Kirby and Jodie Standish from Liverpool and Zoe Allen from Wigan.

The audience were full of anticipation as half the Team have already won British Espoir titles on various apparatus, Rebecca Wing in 2004 on Beam, Laura Jones in 2005 double GB Espoire Champion on Beam and Floor, and Abigail Kirby in 2005 on A. Bars.

Italy brought a strong Junior Team Erika Erbacci, Giulia Peirone, Riva Gloria, Valentina Muolo, Martina Danioni and Anna Reschiglian.

The Team Competition was closely fought with Great Britain edging the Floor event by 39.65 to Italy’s 39.35 with the highlights beautiful stylish but dramatic new Floor Routines from Nott’s Laura Jones and Heathrow’s Becky Wing which gave GB victory on Floor. Strong performances too on Vault where GB triumphed by 41.45 to 40.00, but some fine performances on Bars and Beam gave Italy the team victory by 159.05 to 157.00 with no major errors. Fans will get an opportunity to see the new routines from Becky and Laura at next weekend’s British Team Championships which should be a fascinating battle between Britain’s top Artistic Clubs.

In the Individual Finals on Sunday, Becky and Laura again produced excellent performances with Becky scoring 13.70 on Floor and Italy’s Martina Danioni on 13.40. Becky also achieved the highest score of the Competition with a fantastic 14.25 on Vault, and Martina again in second place with GB’s  Zoe Allan placed with both gymnast’s scoring 13.65, while Abi Kirby was 4th with her 13.55. Laura Jones also produced had a great performance with her top score on Beam of 13.65 with Italy’s scoring winning the Beam and Italy’s Guila Peirone just 0.05 behind in second. Laura also put in a strong routine on Bars to score 13.30, and a closely fought contest saw Italy’s Martina Danioni win the Individual Competition with a total of 53.40, just 0.20 ahead of Laura Jones earning Silver, with team mate Becky Wing collecting bronze.

A very promising sign of things to come at Junior European’s particularly with the GB Team being strengthened even more when Becky Downie and Hannah Clowes with both girl’s benefiting enormously from their Commonwealth success, will also able to compete in a very strong GB Team, who must have high hopes of improving on their 4th place at the 2003 European’s.

British-Team-902

1st April - 2006 BRITISH WOMEN’S ARTISTIC TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEKEND PLUS TICKET DETAILS!

Sunday, 9th April 2006

The Guildford Spectrum, Parkway, Guildford, GU1 1UP

One of our favourite competitions of the year takes place next Sunday 9th April in Guildford as the top Women’s Artistic Clubs in Britain battle or the British Team Title! And this year promises to be one of the most open and exciting Championship’s ever as our Commonwealth Gymnast’s who are still enjoying the thrill of their success in Melbourne, where they won 4 medals (1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze), return to Guildford and are looking forward to their next challenge - the 2006 British Team Championships!

The European Championship’s take place in Volos, Greece from 27-30 April, so this event will also be a very important stepping stone and pointer for the top British competitors.

City of Liverpool will be aiming to retain the British Title for a fifth year in a row. At the moment, it is not clear whether the current British Team Champions will have the mighty Team winning contribution from Britain’s Number 1 Beth Tweddle. She is back in training after her ankle injury which she suffered in Melbourne, but may prefer to miss this event and focus on the Europeans. However with the Gallashan twins, Mel Roberts, Hannah Clowes and Abi Kirby and the huge depth and quality of Liverpool’s Squad, they are favourites to land their 5th straight Title.

But with, or without Beth, this year The Spectrum will see one of the closest and most interesting Team competitions ever with an electric atmosphere as the overall progress in Women’s gymnastics in our country means that  Liverpool’s strongest rival’s in 2005 now have new stars in their teams. Nottingham who won Silver in the 2005 Championships include Becky Downie, Commonwealth Bronze Medalist on Beam, plus Silver medalist in last weekend’s GB V Italy Junior International Laura Jones and double Espoire’s 2005 Champion plus Jordan Lipton and Notts will be hoping to add the British Title to their impressive list of Medals. Heathrow who won Bronze last year will also be determined to add to their record for the most Team Titles won in the Competition’s history after winning their last British Team Title in 1997, and this year they will include Shavahn Church, Commonwealth silver medallist on A. Bars, plus top Junior Becky Wing who won Bronze in the GB V Italy International and a very strong team. Or will it be The Academy’s turn to take the British Title as they are led by Britain’s most successful female gymnast in Melbourne, Imogen Cairns who is the new Commonwealth Champion on Vault? A fantastic line up is sure to mean a thrilling finale as Round 2 sees The Academy, Park-Wrekin, South Durham and Bristol Hawks all go head to head,. And what a finale, as the top 4 Clubs from 2005 battle for the Title once more as  City of Liverpool, Heathrow, Notts and Wigan go for Gold!

Thirteen Teams from all over the Great Britain will take part in these Championships, and if last year’s Championships are anything to go by this will be a “must see” event. See your favourite stars from Melbourne plus all the top gymnasts from around the U.K, as they battle for the British Team Title! We will be there to bring you all the action and excitement, and we can’t wait! 1st April - PINEWOOD CLAIM 10 MEDALS AT BRITISH TUMBLING CHAMPIONSHIPS INCLUDING 3 BRITISH TITLES!

Tumbling fans from around the U.K. were treated to some fantastic performances at the 2006 British Tumbling Championship’s in Fenton Manor. And one of the highlights was a tremendous team performance from Pinewood who won a total of 10 Medals including 3 British Titles, and a clean sweep in the Age 15-16 Men’s British Finals where they won Gold, Silver and Bronze plus the 5th place too!

Vladamir Podbin has joined Anne Pope at Pinewood and the former Coach to double World Age Group Champion Samantha Palmer has produced some excellent results. In the 9-10 Women’s Tumbling an excellent performance from Emily Marsden-Payne where she won the Silver Medal with the Club also finishing in 6th & 7th places in the Finals. Emily also won bronze in the 2005 British Championship’s. The boy’s were not to be outdone in this age group as Kieran Finney won Silver. And in the Women’s 11-12 Age Group, an excellent performance from Louisa Bellis gave her a score of 31.60 and the British Title with Megan Green from Lynx winning Silver as she became the youngest female tumbler in the U.K. to perform full in back out at a British Championships. Jodie Langley from Pinewood also qualified for finals in 6th place.

The Women’s 13-14 group produced a closely fought competition with Mica Parry from Wirrall winning the British Title with a score of 61.00, and Pinewood’s Paige Clarke just 0.30 behind to take Silver with team mate Michelle Brummer winning bronze. In the Men’s 13-14 group Connor Maloney from Lynx, who was also formerly coached by Podobin, won the British Title with a superb performance after missing one of his tumbles during Qualifier’s. And Shaun Gregory from Pinewood made it a thrilling final as he claimed the Silver medal with a total of 60.70, with just 0.5 separating the Gold and Silver medal’s!

Pinewood made it a clean sweep in the 15-16 Men’s Finals with 4 out of the 5 Finalist’s and the British Title going to Stephen Newey who displayed some excellent technique and scored 66.20, with Josh Barringer and Lee Schofield winning the Silver and Bronze medals.

And the most spectacular of all the Tumbling Events as the Senior Men and Women produced incredible runs including full twisting double straight transition’s from the Senior Men! The Finals included Damien Walters who was 5th in the Individual World Tumbling Championships last year and with start values of 9.5 and 9.6 we knew that Pinewood’s Charlie Burrows would produce some incredible runs. Excellent technique with huge powerful tumbling gave Charlie a well deserved Gold Medal with a total of 72.20 and a third British Title for Pinewood. Glenn Smith from Gymworld had a SV of 8.7 in his final run and he won Silver as he pushed Charlie all the way in a thrilling Final.

We go back some years with Vladimir here at Gymnastics Online, as he used to coach my daughter Natasha when she competed at the British Tumbling Championships! And when I caught up with him afterwards, Vov was delighted with the Pinewood Team’s performance “ The Team performed extremely well, I am very pleased with their progress and their success.” 10 Medals at a British Championship’s is an exceptional achievement, and great for the sport as our tumbler’s prepare for the European Trials at Lilleshall on 22nd April it can only mean that there are more challenger’s for places in the GB Team, as we look ahead to Greece and more medal success.

SAMANTHA PALMER WINS SENIOR BRITISH WOMEN’S TITLE AND WAKEFIELD’S SARAH TURNER CLAIMS SILVER!

    Samantha Palmer  1Sam-and-Senior-Women's-Tum02

The Senior Women’s Title was an incredible competition with SV’s rivalling the Men’s as Samantha Palmer showed she is back to her best after recovering from her cruciate ligament injury at British 2 year’s ago which kept her out of competition for 18 months. After winning a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2005, Sam showed her determination right from the start as she posted S.V’s of  8.7 in the Finals to win her first Senior British Title with a score of 72.00 and cap an amazing comeback which included a change of Clubs only 5 month’s before the British Championship’s.

The Women’s Finals also included top European and World medallist’s Sarah Turner, Laura Housan and Zoe McLean who finished 7th in the World Championship’s last year and it was great to see all the competitor’s hugging and congratulating their opponents during the Finals. Unfortunately Sarah’s landing on her opening run caused her to fall forwards but her second run was excellent with scores of 9.1’s and 2’s from the Judges to give her a final total of 66.50 to claim the Silver medal with Wakefield Team mate Laura Housan winning bronze with 65.30. An excellent competition and congratulations to all the medal winners.

And in an exclusive interview with Gymnastics Online Sam revealed her determination to become the Senior European and World Champion!

Sam said “I am absolutely delighted to be able to say I am the Senior British Champion, two years ago in my first senior British I snapped my cruciate ligament in the prelims, last year I was still in rehab from that injury so I've waited a long time to win this title. Now I intend to go on and become Senior European and World Champion, I've held all three titles at junior level now I want to equal that at senior. I'm so proud of my younger team mates Connor Maloney and Megan Green too, they both medalled in their age groups.”  Sam also paid tribute to her new Club saying “ I would like to thank Chris Adams and all the coaches at Lynx gymnastics too, they took us in when we had nowhere to train and even though they weren't a tumbling club they have bent over backwards to help us. Lynx fly Sally Filmer over from Ireland for three days every week to make sure we have a tumbling coach, Sally leaves her husband Craig, her three sons and her own club to be with us so thanks Sally these medals are for you too!”.

Coach Chris Adams also told us that Lynx have been practising on 5 different tracks as they prepared for British including the tracks at Milton Keynes and the National Training Centre at Lilleshall. This was his first British Tumbling Championships and Chris was absolutely delighted with their success. The Championships have since been featured on Anglia and Central T.V which provides some great recognition for all the tumbler’s involved.

The GB tumblers face a busy season as they head to France this weekend for the French Open. Look out for news and results here soon plus lots more Tumbling photos coming soon on Gymnastics Online!

1st April - £17.3 MILLION POUNDS PERFORMANCE PATHWAY FUNDING TO BE ALLOCATED ACROSS SPORT’S WORLD CLASS DEVELOPMENT AND WORLD CLASS TALENT PROGRAMMES!

U.K. Sport have confirmed details of the “100 day plan” for additional sports and athlete funding in the build up to London 2012. The Government announced in the Budget that £200 million pounds of public funding plus a further £100 million to be raised by company donations will go towards Olympic Sports judged to be capable of producing medals in London 2012 over the next 6 years. Now U.K. Sport have committed to announcing details of which sports will be given additional funding and each sport’s allocation by 9th April with funds due to be received by 6th July. Ironically this will be exactly 12 month’s after the historic announcement that London has been awarded the Olympic Games!

The Awards are based on the “no compromise” strategy which has controversially cut funding drastically for Men’s and Rhythmic Gymnastics and removed most of the funding for non Olympic Sports such as Tumbling and Sports Acrobatics. This led to much criticism and pleas by British Gymnastics and leading figures from many sports who remain very concerned about our ability to compete against other countries whose preparations for Beijing 2008 and London 2012 have already begun, and the fact we have already lost 12 month’s preparation at a crucial time for athlete preparation. Concerns have also been raised after the Wembley Stadium fiasco which will now not open until 2007, millions of pounds over budget, with some commentators and the public questioning the ability of Great Britain to stage an Olympic Games if our National Stadium cannot be opened on time. We are convinced that Seb Coe’s team will stage a superb Games but we stress that there must be no further funding delays!

However we are delighted that plans are at last moving ahead rapidly with U.K. Sport announcing the following timetable and commitment to our athletes and sports bodies which includes £17.3 million pounds Performance Pathway funding to to be allocated across Sport’s World Class Development and World Class Talent Programmes today - the 1st April!

Details of the Plan are as follows:-

The UK Sport “100 Day” Delivery Plan for Additional Funding:

To ensure transparency of the process and enable everyone in the sporting system to be confident that no time will be lost in the distribution of additional funding for 2012, UK Sport will work to an initial “100 Day” delivery plan. This commits UK Sport to:

    • Confirming all relevant sport by sport funding awards for period 2006-2009 (Beijing cycle) within 14 working days of announcement
    • First quarter payments released to all relevant sports within 21 days of grant acceptance. Further payments to some sports then committed according to set progress against NGB Action Plans
    • A quarterly public update on progress, including review of funding released on a sport by sport basis
    • On 1st April, allocating a total of £17.3 million pathway funding to support the World Class Talent and World Class Development programmes, following the formal transfer of responsibilities from Sport England to UK Sport
    • By 6th July, ensuring all sports are in position to receive full award or with agreed timetable to ensure full allocation in place

We will bring you further news of any funding announcements for British Gymnastics as soon as it is announced here on Gymnastics Online!

2nd April - GYMWORLD PREMISES TO BE SOLD OFF FOR HOUSING!

TOP TEESIDE CLUB’S HUNT FOR NEW PREMISES BEGINS

Sad news today as Middlesborough College confirmed that the Marton Road Campus where premier Teeside Club Gymworld are based, is to be sold off as part of the College’s planned move to a new home on the Middlehaven Site.

Gymworld was set up in 1986 as the County Gymnastics Centre and £45,000 was raised towards equipping the Centre. Twenty year’s later, 1,000 adults and youngsters use the centre including students from the college, schools and local gymnastics clubs including children with disabilities.

Six gymnasts who have trained at Gymworld have represented Great Britain as Senior Internationals demonstrating the high standards achieved. Glenn Smith, 22, from Brotton, is an International Tumbler who began gymnastics at the centre when he was six years old. Glenn hopes to represent Great Britain in the Tumbling Team who will compete in this year’s European Championships. He won a Silver Medal in the British Senior Men’s Tumbling Championship’s in Fenton Manor last weekend, and hopes to represent Great Britain in the European Tumbling Championships later this year.

John Atkinson who has been involved in gymnastics for 37 years, and has been Chairman of the Teeside Gymnastics Association for the last 22 years, said it will be a catastrophe for gymnastics in the Tees Valley area if the facility is lost, "I would be devastated if the facilities disappeared. It would be a tragedy. It is the only facility of its kind in the Tees Valley and it is so well used. We are happy to receive any support and advice we can."

Craig Burton, manager of Gymworld for Middlesbrough College, said: "It is a jewel in the crown of facilities for the college, the town and the Tees Valley area and I hope we can take it forward and provide an even better centre. We need to be able to compete with other state of the art facilities in other parts of the country."

John Hogg, principal of Middlesbrough College, said: "This is a facility which the college has supported over the years and is keen to preserve. We are actively pursuing providing an alternative with the gymnastic association."

Ironically only 2 month’s ago Gymworld’s Special Olympics Team were runners up in the Annual Teeside Sports Awards, as 14 gymnast’s who took part in the 2005 Special Olympics won an incredible total of 23 Gold Medals. Senior coach June Burnett said Gymworld were very proud of all 14 Special Olympians - Claire Skelton, Katy Demoily, Nick Walton, Helen Robinson, Liam Allen, Joel Fitzpatrick, Rosalyn Green, Caroline Jennison, Jon Hardman, Sean Jewitt, Chris McCarten, John Hutchinson, Andrew Atkinson and Penny Watson. June said "To bring back so many medals from such a prestigious event really was an amazing effort. To be nominated for these awards means a great deal to everyone at Gymworld”.

If you can help in any way please contact us at Gymnastics Online and we will forward details to John Atkinson and Gymworld. Sadly we have reported similar stories for 2 other Club’s in the last year and this appears to be a growing problem for sports Clubs in general as the demand for housing increases. We hope that the Club are able to find suitable premises and continue their excellent reputation of producing top class International gymnast’s as well as some very special Olympians and continue to provide gymnastics for the whole community.

2 April - BRITISH SPORTS ACROBATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006

The British Sports Acrobatics Championships is one of the highlights of the gymnastics calendar in the U.K. and has it’s own unique atmosphere as old rivalries are resumed and Acro friends from around the U.K. are reunited in a 2 day extravaganza of Sports Acrobatics and the best of Britain’s Tumbler’s.

Saturday saw a packed arena full of anticipation, as first time qualifier’s for British Final’s mixed with GB International’s and even managed to grab a few autographs in between sessions! The 2006 Championship’s are particularly important as they served as the first major U.K. Competition to use the new Code and the first Trial’s for the World Acrobatic Championship’s and International Age Group Championship’s so every score counts towards possible selection! The tension was clear as uncharacteristic error’s from seasoned partnership’s all added to the drama, which also saw new partnership’s at British Championship’s just a few month’s after being formed. How would the Acrobat’s, Coaches and Judge’s interpret the new Code, and who would become new British Champion’s and boost their chances of representing Great Britain in the biggest competition of their lives? Don’t miss our great report from British right here on Gymnastics Online!

As the audience and excitement grew, King Edmund took an early lead in the Medals Table as Abbey Carvell and Hannah Palmer produced excellent routines and scores of 26.25 in their balance routine and 25.15 on tempo to win the Level 4 Women’s Pair’s British Title with a score of 51.40 and well deserved Gold Medal’s for the girl’s.

A disappointingly low number of qualifier’s in the Grade 4 Mixed Pair’s and Men’s Pairs saw Dean Robinson and Hannah Mellor from Stafford win Gold as the only entrant’s in the Mixed Pairs Final after Falcon’s Carl Denham and Fiona Cowley had to withdraw. However this should not detract from a terrific performance from Dean & Hannah who scored well over the 50 point mark. The Men’s Pair’s Title became vacant as Dominic Young & Christopher Liddell had to withdraw. Hopefully next year will see an increase in Qualifier’s at this Level as Club’s enter more gymnast’s and the enormous increase in popularity of Sports Acrobatics in the U.K. continues to grow.

The Level Four Women’s Groups saw 14 trio’s  battle for the British Title, with good choreography and interpretation of music plus lots of support for local gymnast’s from South Staffs demonstrate why the British Championship’s are such an exciting event. Rosie Charsley, Rosie Cheers & Sophie Everson from West Kirby were the stand out group and 25.75 in their Balance and 26.70 setting a target of 52.45, but they were closely followed by  Tanya Johnson, Laura Martland & Bethany Johnson from Wigan Seagulls who won the Silver Medal with a total of 50.95, and local favourites South Staffs’ Carly Robinson, Emma Strachen & Chloe Keary winning bronze.

The British Tumbling Championship’s also took place at the same time and the excited crowd roared encouragement to the Tumbler’s during the Acrobat’s performances so maximum concentration was needed and the gymnast’s and Tumbler’s responded with some excellent performances. Proud gymnasts, parents, coaches and supporters all ended the day with memories which will last a lifetime.

We should also pay tribute to the superb organizational skills of the Acro Coaches, Sandra Sargeant, Mervyn and the whole Sound and Judging Team’s as large number’s of gymnast’s, many at British for the first time, and some who were clearly nervous were encouraged and supported throughout a long opening day’s competition.

SUNDAY - NEW JUNIOR AND SENIOR BRITISH CHAMPIONS CROWNED!

The Junior, Senior and Open British Finals took place on Sunday as the Competition saw the experienced gymnast’s from Spelthorne, Deerness, Wakefield, Harrow, Bromley and King Edmund all capable of winning British Titles, but with new routines and unfortunate withdrawl’s the Competition was wide open. We particularly looked forward to the Junior Mixed Pair’s where Spelthorne’s Christian Beecher and Katie Axten, team mates James  Palmer and Georgia Sturt would go head to head against Wakefield’s Anthony Middleton and Amy Laycock and team mates Lee Colley and Sarah Cameron. And in the Junior & Senior Women’s Groups could Harrow maintain the excellent progress which they have made and win the British Titles which they came so close to last year? And would Deerness maintain their terrific success at the 2005 Championship’s? We did not have long to wait as the Acrobat’s marched in and the crowd rose as the National Anthem echoed proudly around the Arena.

The crowd, although smaller than Saturday’s, were highly knowledgeable and it was excellent to see such acrobats encouraging and congratulating their rivals and great appreciation of the routines from the whole crowd regardless of which Club they represented. The cheers which rang out for the established International’s helped make a great atmosphere. And it could not have been closer in the Junior Women’s Pairs as Harrow’s Kelly Mannion & Deborah Owen produced excellent confident routines which was closely matched by Kirsty Saunders & Alex Drennan from Deerness Valley. In both the balance and tempo routines Kirsty & Alex scored a superb 27.65 for a total of 55.30, while Kelly and Deborah scored 27.50 in Balance but edged ahead on Tempo with a 27.95, to lead the competition with a total of 55.45. And the combined routine, it was just as close as Kirsty and Alex threw down their challenge as they hit a 27.10, but it was absolutely nail biting as Kelly and Deborah responded with a 27.15, they had won their first British Title by just 0.05, with Wakefield’s Beth Ledger & Nicole Hinds taking bronze!

The Junior and Senior Men’s Groups are always a highlight with the incredible talent and spectacular and daring skills performed. Special congratulations must go to the excellent performances from Adam McAssey, Adam Buckingham, Jamie Cowler & Sam Sturt from Spelthorne who despite a slight error, recovered well to score 28.70 in the balance, and an excellent performance in tempo gave them 28.95. Their final Combined routine had the whole arena clapping along as they stormed to a 28.80 and the British Junior Men’s Group’s Title. A classic competition was in store in the Senior Men’s Fours between Wakefield and Bromley Valley, but sadly Andy Denny, Adam Smith, Adam Dibbs and Andy Price had to withdraw before the Event. However Wakefield’s Christopher McGreevy, Mark Poole, Alex Uttley & Jack Atherton produced another exceptional performance as they won the Senior Title after the crowd held their breath at the incredible double twisting somersaults performed 25 feet above the ground. Both Men’s Fours were excellent.

But the drama was not over as Christian and Katie took the floor, with Damian Walters performing full twisting double straight transitions on the Tumbling Track behind them, the roars from the crowd produced the highlights of the day. Christian and Katie were stunning as their routines were beautifully interpreted and the music expertly choreographed with the balances held perfectly by Katie, winning terrific support from everyone around the Arena and the highest scores of the Championship’s with 29.45 for their Balance, 29.00 for Tempo for a combined score of an incredible 58.45, and their Combined score of 29.40 set a huge target for the remaining Finalist’s Spelthorne’s James Palmer and Georgia Sturt also produced excellent routines to take the Silver Medal with 29.10 just edging Wakefield’s Lee Colley and Sarah Cameron into bronze by 0.10 as they scored 29.00. Anthony and Amy also pushed hard for a podium place and their 28.95 gave them 4th place with only 0.15 separating the Silver Medals and 4th position in a classic contest and some of Britain’s top Acrobats!

The Junior and Senior Women’s Groups featured all the drama and excitement Acrobatics fans around the World expect in a major competition. In both the Junior’s and Senior’s Harrow led the way with their balance and tempo routines as Katy Smith, Jessica Dangerfield & Ciara McGrath led the Junior’s with 56.80, and in Senior’s Erin Jameson, Clare-Louise Thompson & Grace Blacklock led with 54.44. Could Harrow claim three British Titles to cap a fantastic performance from the whole Team and Coach Natasha Maxwell ? The Junior’s were locked in a great contest with Wakefield’s Natasha Johnston, Emma Storey & Amber Webster who were second in Qualifier’s, but Katy, Jessica & Ciara’s combined routine were never going to miss their chance of their first British Title as they swept to Gold with a terrific performance which earned 28.70, after being pushed all the way by South Tyneside’s Candice Slater, Nikkita Cox & Coral Patrick who won Silver. Natasha, Emma and Amber won bronze just 0.10 behind the Silver Medalist’s in an absorbing final.

In the Senior Women’s Group’s Erin, Claire-Louise and Grace’s innovative combination of mime, top class acrobatics and excellent choreography stood out, and they were desperately unlucky to make an uncharacteristic error in their Combined routine as their score of 26.45 opened the door for their challenger’s. Experienced International trio Leanne Turner, Emily Collins & Victoria Lamkin from Spelthorne stepped up and produced another fine performance as they scored 27.95 to win the British Title and make up for the disappointment of having to withdraw from the British Tournament after one of the girl’s twisted her ankle during their routine last November. Louise Poole, Jennie Miller & Emma Chivers from Wakefield won Silver with Harrow winning bronze.

And in the Senior Men’s Pairs, another intriguing contest as Mark Fyson & Christopher Jones from Deerness Valley went head to head with fellow GB Team mates Reece Durbridge & Edward Upcott from Spelthorne. The audience loved this one as they clapped enthusiastically to Reece & Edward’s routine but they were pipped for Gold by Mark & Chris by 28.96 to 28.75 after Reece & Edward had led the balance and tempo routines.

As the Tumbling Event finished, the Senior Men’s Competition reached a thrilling finale as Robert Tregoning & Alex Grayson from Deerness Valley produced an unbeatable performance as they won the Senior British Title with a score of 28.801, with Horsham’s Matt Bennett & Isis Clegg-Vinell in Silver position with 26.83.

As we waited for the scores, a minute’s silence was held in memory of Chris Fordham the DMT British International gymnast who tragically died after a training accident last month. Chris was a friend to many of the British Acrobats and Tumbler’s and many fought back tears as they stood in silence paying their respects and their own special memories of Chris from his many friends around the world.

Just before the Presentations we learnt too that Mervyn Hedges and his great sound and support team have to step down after nine years providing expert coverage of the British Championships, and British Gymnastics will host the Event in future. I know that Merv and his team are all volunteers and the Championships could not take place without the countless number of hours which they have worked over the last 9 years. We are delighted that they will continue to host the NDP’s and British School’s Championship’s, but on behalf of all Sports Acrobats, Coaches and fans, we would like to send our sincere thanks, appreciation and best wishes to the whole Team for their huge contribution to Sports Acrobatics, and Merv’s unique talent for making everyone smile and enjoy their competitions. They will be missed by all of us!

As the presentations took place, tears, joy and congratulations amongst gymnasts, coaches and parents, another terrific British Championships has passed and new British Champion’s have been crowned with the new Code generally being welcomed by Judges, Coaches and gymnast’s  Congratulations to everyone at the British Championships, and good luck at the second Trial’s at Lilleshall on the 29th & 30th April. We will be at Lilleshall bringing you news, results and photos as we head towards World’s later this year!

14 April - NASTIA AND CHELLSIE TIE FOR ALL AROUND TITLE AT PACIFIC ALLIANCE CHAMPIONSHIP’S

Content removed - Ken Summerfield 25th August, 2008

GOLDEN GIRLS TAKE AA TITLE AT PACIFIC ALLIANCE

USA WIN TEAM TITLE AS AUSTRALIA TAKE SILVER AND CANADA BRONZE

Nastia Liukin of Parker, Texas, and Chellsie Memmel of West Allis, Wis., tied for the all-around title at the 2006 Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships at the Neil Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The U.S. women won the team title with 183.150 points over Australia, 177.050 points. Canada, with 172.050, finished third.

With the night’s highest uneven bars score of 15.950, Liukin had amassed enough points to overcome a stumble on floor in the final rotation on a one and a half twist to a punch front (front flip). Her beam score, 15.600 points, was third best, helping take her all-around total to 61.050 points.

“Most of my routines are really new since Worlds,” Liukin said. “I just think I need a little more time with them to be consistent.”

Memmel, in her first competition under the new code of points and her first since minor ankle surgery, trailed Liukin heading into her final apparatus, the floor exercise. Except for vault, all of Memmel’s scores ranked among the top three. She earned the night’s highest floor score, 15.450, with good landings on all of her difficult tumbling passes, including a high double layout and a pass including two whip backs (back flip) into an Arabian double front.

“I didn’t think I was that close to Nastia going into floor so I didn’t really think about winning,” Memmel said. “I’m just really happy with my floor performance and happy to be back competing again.”

Jana Bieger of Coconut Creek, Fla., earned the third-highest all-around score but because only two athletes per country are eligible for medals, Australia’s Hollie Dykes received the bronze medal. Shayla Worley of Orlando, Fla., was fifth in all-around scoring. Bieger was the only U.S. athlete to perform two vaults and she easily earned the highest vault score of the evening, 14.850 points.

Bieger qualified for the vault final; Liukin and Worley qualified on bars. Memmel and Liukin qualified for event finals on beam, and Bieger and Memmel qualified on floor.

In the junior division, Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Bianca Flohr of Creston, Ohio, finished 1-2 in the all-around, leading the U.S. junior women to the team title over second-place Canada.

Tessa Pama of Dana Point, Calif, and Rebecca Bross of Ann Arbor, Mich, earned the third- and fourth-highest all-around scores but because only two athletes per country are eligible for all-around awards, China’s Xio Sha received the bronze medal.

Flohr earned the highest score on uneven bars, 15.350, while Johnson was best on vault, where her double-twisting Yurchenko scored 15.000 points. On floor, she sealed her all-around victory with a 15.350-point score.

“I knew that if I wanted a chance to win that I had to go out and do a great floor routine,” Johnson said. “This was such a big accomplishment because I wanted to prove myself after my last meet in Montreal and I think I did that.”

All four U.S. juniors qualified for an event final. Johnson will compete on vault, beam and floor; Pama will compete on vault, bars, and floor; Flohr will compete on bars; and Bross will compete on beam.
