10 APRIL CITY OF LIVERPOOL MAKE IT 4 IN A ROW

City of Liverpool won their 4th British Team Championships in a row this afternoon in Guildford! Notts won Silver with the youngest team in the Finals, and Heathrow A won bronze for the second year in a row!

City of Liverpool won their 4th consecutive British Team Title with a terrific performance at Guildford this afternoon. Beth Tweddle came first on Floor, Vault and Beam and second on Bars where she demonstrated new elements. Mel Roberts followed her success at the USA Versus GB International last weekend with a fantastic Floor routine coming second overall, finishing second on floor, third on bars and 4th on beam. Hannah Clowes performed a terrific floor routine finishing 9th overall, with Helen and Carol Galashan performing well, with Carol finishing 4th on Bars. Aisling Wiliams was injured and Jodie Standish was unfortunately injured during the bars warm up but Liverpool still won by a clear 8.875 points. Beth also performed her new tumble of round off, one and a half twist step out into round off flic double tucked Arabian in the last routine of the day to bring the title back to Liverpool.

Rhian Pugh from Bristol Hawks came first on Bars with a fabulous routine with lots of innovative Bar Work scoring a well deserved 9.500 and the third individual highest all around score in the Championships. Rhian and Beth shared the Ursel Free Trophy for the highest individual score of the day with Beth’s Floor routine and Rhian’s bars each scoring 9.500

Notts, as predicted by Gymnastics Online, performed brilliantly to take the Team Silver medal with Becky Downie coming 4th overall and 4th on floor. This followed her Gold at the Senior BSGA Championships last month. Becky was on each piece at the same time as Rhian Pugh from Bristol Hawks, and it was difficult to watch both girls at the same time as they both put in a fantastic performance with just 0.25 separating them in the final scores. All of the Notts girls displayed remarkable maturity for such a young team, with Niamh Ripon following her Silver Medal at the Level 2 Compulsory Championships last week.

Heathrow A came 3rd equalling their 3rd position at last year’s Championships, with Rebecca Wing coming 10th overall with a powerful performance, and a strong team team performance by all of the girls. Danusia Francis followed her Bronze at the Level 2 Complulsory Championships and British Schools.

Amongst the other highlights, Rosalie Hutton from Pipers Vale came 5th overall, and second on beam only 0.125 behind Becky, and Cherrelle Fennel from Wigan finishing 6th overall with a second place on Vault. Imogen Cairns from The Academy came 7th overall, coming 3rd on vault and beam in another great performance. Park Wrekin’s Jennifer Hannah came 8th scoring consistently across all 4 pieces.

Congratulations to Wigan who came 4th after having to withdraw last year, and newcomers The Academy in 5th position. The Academy had 4 of their gymnasts finish in the Top 36 individual results, a great performance from both teams. Bristol Hawks finished in 6th position, up from 9th last year, with another strong team performance. South Durham were affected by injuries and slipped out of the medal positions, but Amy Fossheim came 3rd on Floor and they should be contenders again next year.

Each team had great support with a fantastic atmosphere from a noisy and knowledgeable audience. Great credit goes to British Gymnastics, and all of the coaches and gymnasts for such a great weekend’s gymnastics. Thanks to all of the gym fans who I met at the weekend, it’s great to know that you enjoy Gymnastics Online so much! I couldn’t resist including a great photo of my daughter Natasha with Beth!
