The Mens Tumbling World Champion and World Cup Final winner Wang Jiexu from China remained undefeated in International competition as he won his 5th consecutive Gold Medal in Quebec at the World Cup Trampoline & Tumbling Event. Quebec will host the 2007 World Championships and the event was a huge success including a new World Record difficulty score in Mens Synchronised Trampoline attracting top competitors from around the Globe. Wang Jiexu finished almost 3 points ahead of Silver Medalist Josef Wadecki from Poland ( 76.80 to 73.90 ). Only one tenth of a mark seperated the two men after their first pass where Jiexu scored 37.80 to Wadecki’s 36.80. But Wagn’s second pass received a fantastic 39.00 which at 12.80 had the highest difficulty of the competition. Great Britain’s Michael Barnes won the bronze medal with another strong performance to score 70.90 just one tenth of a mark ahead of the home crowd’s favourite Denis Vachon from Canada, who scored 70.80. Mike’s runs scored 36.20 and 34.70 and followed an excellent performance the previous week in Lake Placid at the USA World Cup Event where Mike recorded a personal best score as he finished in 4th place. Charlie Burrows from Pinewood placed 5th with 69.00 ahead of the 2 USA finalist’s Kalon Ludvigson and Chris Adair who withdrew after his first run.
In Women’s Tumbling Anna Korobeynikova from Russia renewed her duel with Great Britain’s 2006 World Cup Final Champion and triple World Cup gold medalist Samantha Palmer, whose preparation had been affected by injury with Sam forced to withdraw from the British Championships and the Lake Placid World Cup Event. Anna won Gold in Lake Placid and secured her 10th World Cup Gold medal in Quebec after scoring 69.70 to Sam’s 68.80 whose second run had the highest tariff of the Event with 9.50. Canada’s Emily Smith brought huge cheers from the home crowd as she won bronze with 64.20, just one tenth of a mark ahead of the 2006 European and Lake Placid bronze medalist Alina Yarrullova from Russia. Great Britain’s Sarah Turner had led the Preliminary Round where she scored 65.30, following her bronze medal at the British Championships and Sarah finished in 6th place with 62.000 in a Final which also included Yulia Hall from the USA returning from injury who came 7th. The new British Tumbling Champion Laura Housan finished in 8th position in Qualifications and was taken to hospital for a precautionary x-ray after injuring her ankle in the warm up. The GB Tumblers said they found the track hard as it is brand new with some competitors struggling to work it well. These excellent results were achieved by the GB Tumblers despite the Team having to fund the trips themselves as they receive no funding.
17 year old Dong Dong won the first ever World Cup Mens Trampoline gold medal for China in only his second World Cup Event as he scored a magnificent 40.60 from a 15.80 tariff after crashing in the Final in Lake Placid in his International debut. Italy’s Flavio Cannone won his third World Cup Silver medal as a terrific routine was awarded 40.50 just one tenth behind Dong Dong. The 2006 World Cup winner and Gold Medalist in all five World Cup Events in 2006 Yasuhiro Ueyama from Japan also scored 40.50 with a 16.20 tarrif but had to settle for bronze under the tie-break rules. In Women’s Trampoline, 4 time World Champion and 2000 Olympic Champion Irina Karavaeva from Russia scored 39.00 to win her 23rd World Cup Gold Medal with a 14.70 DD and another superb performance. Great Britain’s Claire Wright scored 36.50 with a 14.40 tariff and struggled a little towards the end but Claire recovered well for an excellent finish from the 6 time British Champion.
Canada’s Karen Cockburn and Rosannagh MacLennan claimed the Gold medals in Womens Synchro as Canadian team mates Jason Burnett and Phil Barbado set a new World record in Men’s Synchro with 16.000 DD, just one week after Jason had set a new World record in Men’s Individual Trampoline difficulty with 17.50. The Men’s Synchro Gold medals were won by Nikolai Kazak and Vladimir Kakorco from BLR, just two tenths ahead of Portugal’s Diogo Ganchinho and Nuno Merino on 48.80.
