RHIAN RETURNS IN COMMONWEALTH INVITATIONAL AS SCOTLAND WIN GOLD!
The Celtic Cup was held at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff on 11th February for the men’s teams from Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The Event also featured a pre Commonwealth Invitational for the women where Wales took on Scotland, with Ireland also competing as guests. The audience were delighted to see Rhian Pugh return to competition after an injury at World’s forced her to pull out of her biggest competition so far. Rhian competed on 3 pieces with her highest score of 12.700 on Floor, and it’s great to see her back and ready to compete at the Commonwealth Games next month.
City of Liverpool’s Melanie Roberts scored the competition high of 52,883 with team mate Lynette Lisle earning 52.216, but it was not enough to stop Scotland winning the Commonwealth Invitational Team Event by 158.331 to 156.561. Helen Galashan was the highest individual scorer for Scotland with 52.183 including the highest score of the competition on Beam where she hit a 13.400. Emma White also hit some great routines to place 2nd for Scotland with 51.799 including a fabulous 14.566 on Vault.
An international match for the Senior and Junior girls was also held, between Ireland and Wales, as both Scotland and Northern Ireland had withdrawn from the event. Wales won both events comfortably with Stacey Webb achieving the highest score on the Senior Event with a 32.550 and Lizzie Beddoe in the Junior International scoring 31.725. Ruby Hartery also posted a 31.050 for the Welsh Junior Team.
The Women’s Celtic Cup is due to be reheld this summer.
Congratulations to all gymnasts involved and good luck to the gymnasts who will be competing in Melbourne!.
