9th February - Paul And Morgan Hamm return to Competition ahead of Beijing!

Blaine Wilson also confirms his return in major boost to the USA Men’s Team!

Hopes of a medal in Beijing increased dramatically for the USA Men’s Team this week as Paul and Morgan Hamm plus three time Olympian Blaine Wilson announced their return to competitive gymnastics. This is a major boost to the American Team who fell from the Silver Medal position in Athens to 13th position at the 2006 World Championships, finishing outside the top 12 qualifying positions. In an article in USA Today, the two time Olympian Hamm twins confirmed their goal of making the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. In another major boost, their Olympian team mate Blaine Wilson, also announced his return to competitive gymnastics late last year, and the three will train at Ohio State University with Miles Avery.

At the 2004 Olympic Games, Paul Hamm became the first U.S. male to win the Olympic all-around title. Paul , Morgan and Blaine Wilson were members of the men’s team that won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Athens, the best men’s team Olympic showing since 1984. Paul and Morgan Hamm were on the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Teams, and Wilson was on the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic squads. The Hamms decided to take a break from competitive gymnastics in June 2005 to concentrate on their studies, and Wilson retired in August 2005 to coach in Southern California.

Paul Hamm will be hoping for a happier ending to his gymnastics career after his Gold Medal winning performance in the All Around competition in Athens was marred by scoring errors and controversy. Paul scored a total of 57.823 with Korean gymnasts in Silver and Bronze medal positions. Soon after the event, the International Gymnastics Federation confirmed that an error had been made in scoring South Korean Yang Tae-Young's penultimate event, when he was awarded the bronze medal. The Koreans protested and FIG president Bruno Grandi suggested Hamm share the medal as an acknowledgment of a mistake, Hamm was forced to defend his gold well after the Games were over, all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The CAS eventually declared Paul Hamm as the rightful gold medalist, and this and other errors in the scoring system at Athens forced changes but the sport’s credibility was badly damaged in front of millions of viewers watching the Olympic Final around the World, who rightly believed that Paul Hamm was the true Olympic Champion.

But now the Hamm twins now aged 24, intend to put the events behind them and fulfill their dream to become three time Olympians at Beijing 2008.

The Hamms are currently training 6 days a week at Ohio State as they prepare their routines which will need to be adjusted to meet the requirements of the new Code. Paul and Morgan studied the changes in the scoring system closely before announcing their decision after a meeting with USA Gymnastics. They plan to compete in a limited number of events this year as they finish their degree courses, including the USA Championships in August in San Jose. Morgan will graduate next month with a degree in exercise science, and plans to go to study at a Chiropractic School after Beijing. Paul will graduate with an accounting degree in June and plans to go to business school after next year’s Olympics. They should begin a full competitive schedule in 2008 as they build towards the Beijing Olympics.

Speaking about the twin’s decision to return to competition, Hamm said “ We know for a fact that if we’re in good shape, we can help the team. Not just help the team improve from 13th place, but hopefully help the U.S. contend for a medal. That would be nice to end our career in this sport with a different note, one without controversy, hopefully, and a relatively high amount of success. We would love to be able to go to another Olympics and have people remember us for another great performance."

Morgan Hamm said “ A love of the sport is a big part of it. We love gymnastics, we want to see what we can accomplish. To see if we can make the Olympic Team and win medals in Beijing. Our number 1 goal is to help the team get back into medal contention ”.

The USA must finish in the top 12 to qualify for the Olympics. If they repeat their disappointing 13th place position then the USA would send only a few individual qualifiers to Beijing which could have disastrous implications for funding of Men’s Artistic programmes in the USA.

USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny told USA Today “These guys know what it takes to win, and I’m confident it will be positive for them and positive for USA Gymnastics. Paul, Morgan and Blaine bring a lot to the table. We have seen that veteran leadership, talent and the ability to perform under pressure are all factors among the top teams in the world. Each of these athletes is a proven winner and could have a significant impact on the men's program."

8th February - A Day in the Life of Beth Tweddle on Sky TV and Channel Four this week!

More good news for gym fans in the U.K. as Sky Sports and Channel Four will both broadcast Trans World Sport’s excellent interview with World A Bars Champion Beth Tweddle from the 14th February onwards!

The show features a unique insight into Beth’s gymnastics and her everyday life and shows viewers how a World Champion gymnast lives through a typical day. Beth is Great Britain’s most successful Artistic gymnast ever, and the 6 time British Champion began gymnastics aged 7 after trying ballet. She sprang to National prominence in 2001 when she competed in her first World Championships and performed superbly on A-Bars. 12 months later Beth won Britain’s first ever medal at a European Championships winning bronze on Bars, and followed this in 2003 winning bronze at the World Championships in Anaheim. In 2004 Beth achieved a lifetime ambition by competing at the Athens Olympics but was drawn in the first sub-division and just missed qualifying for the Olympic Final. This made her even more determined to succeed.

Content removed - Ken Summerfield 25th August 2008

Beth competed at World’s in Melbourne in 2005 and set another new British record as she finished 4th in the All Around beating our previous best of 13th in the AA, and claimed her second bronze medal at a World Championships on Bars. Her score of 9.575 was only 0.0875 behind new World Champion Nastia Liukin as the USA claimed Gold and Silver with Chellsie Memmel scoring 9.587, just 0.012 ahead of Beth!

2006 was an unforgettable year for Beth with the dissapointment of missing the Commonwealth Games through injury where she was clear favourite, but a superb new Bars routine saw Beth crowned as European Champion. As preparation for the World Championships began, she combined her studies at Liverpool’s St. John Moore University where she is studying for a degree in Sports Science with an average 30 hours per week in the gym, often for 5-6 hours per day. The 2006 World Championships had millions of TV viewers on the edge of our seats as Beth stepped up and produced a stunning performance with a perfectly stuck landing and was crowned the new World Champion!

Beth performs lots of work in local Schools in Toxteth promoting sport and is keen to build links between Schools and local Clubs. She is very supportive of her team mates and media interest in her success has helped make Beth a household name, with TV, radio and newspaper interviews. Many of our friends who were not interested in gymnastics spoke about her success and determination after the Championships, and she came 3rd in the recent BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards where she performed part of her World Championships winning routine.

Now TV viewers will get to see more of Beth’s  schedule with her City of Liverpool Coach Amanda Kirby in a series which has already featured the 2005 World Champion Nastia Liukin, Brazil’s dynamic Daiane Dos Santos and one of our all time favourite gymnasts, the legendary Svetlana Khorkina.

Lisa Wang of North Shore Rhythmic, and Rachel Marmer of Hollywood Academy of Gymnastics, the 2006 U.S. rhythmic gymnastics senior and junior all-around champions, respectively, headline the field for the 2007 Rhythmic Challenge, Feb. 18, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The national team will be re-ranked at the conclusion of the Rhythmic Challenge, which is the first national competition of 2007.

“The Rhythmic Challenge is a highly competitive event showcasing the nation’s top rhythmic gymnasts,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “It is the first step in their preparation for the Pan American Games and the 2007 World Championships.”

The Rhythmic Challenge begins at 12:30 p.m. MT and has an all-around format. The seniors compete in rope, hoop, ribbon and clubs, while the juniors compete in rope, hoop, ribbon and ball.

In addition to her 2006 U.S. all-around title, Wang is a two-time national champion in the ball and ribbon, winning both events at the 2005 and 2006 Visa Championships. She also won the clubs event at the 2005 Visa Championships. Wang was a member of the U.S. Pan American Championships Team that won a gold medal in 2005.

In 2006, Marmer won the Rhythmic Challenge junior title and swept all four individual events and the all-around in the junior division at the 2006 Visa Championships. 2006 was her fourth consecutive junior all-around national title. Marmer’s international accomplishments in 2006 included winning gold medals in the team, rope, hoop and ribbon events at the Junior Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships and claiming Pacific Alliance Championships junior division titles in the all-around, hoop, clubs and ribbon.

Also competing in the Rhythmic Challenge are 2006 U.S. rope and clubs champion Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md./Rhythmflex, and 2006 U.S. junior all-around silver medalist Marlee Shape of Buffalo Grove, Ill./North Shore Rhythmic.

Zetlin won all four individual events (rope, hoop, clubs and ribbon) in the junior division at the 2005 Visa Championships. She was a member of the U.S. Team that won a gold medal at the 2006 Pacific Alliance Championships.

In addition to her 2006 U.S. all-around silver medal, Shape placed second in the junior hoop, ribbon and rope events and finished third in clubs at the 2006 Visa Championships. At the 2006 Pacific Alliance Championships, she won gold medals in the team and rope competitions and claimed bronze medals in the all-around and clubs. Shape was a member of the U.S. Team that won a gold medal at the 2006 Junior Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, where she was also the bronze medalist in rope and clubs.

The 2007 Rhythmic Challenge is open to the public and admission is free. The Rhythmic Invitational, a competition for Levels 7-10, will be held Feb. 15-17 in conjunction with the Rhythmic Challenge.

24th February - VOTE FOR WAKEFIELD ACROBATS ON BBC TONIGHT!

Tumblers narrowly missed qualification on TV last week.

After last week’s terrific performance by the Wakefield Tumblers on prime time Saturday night TV, the Wakefield Acrobats will be performing on BBC One’s “When Will I Be Famous” at 7.35pm tonight!

Three of Wakefield’s top Acrobatics Groups will take part in a head to head qualifying round and hope to qualify for the Finals when viewers will be able to vote for their favourite Act for a prize of £10,000! And we want every gym fan in the UK to show our support for the Acrobats by voting for them tonight!

The performance will feature Wakefield’s Men’s Four which includes 4 European and World Championships Medalists! Jack Atherton and Chris Mcgreevy won the European Mens Pairs Title and they will combine with Chris Carter who is a former Men’s 4 European and World Medallist, and Wayne Skivington who won World  and European Medals in Men’s Pair.

GB Internationals Lee Colley and Sarah Cameron will perform in the Mixed Pair and have won numerous International medals and helped Great Britain win the Team Bronze at the 2006 European Team Championships. They also won bronze in Belarus in December and will compete for the British Title in April.

And finally the Pair, Amy Crow and Amy Laycock who have had huge success with their previous partners as Amy Crow is a former European Champion with Lee’s partner Sarah Cameron, and Amy Laycock winning many National & International Medals with her former partner Anthony Middleton.

The acrobats will be hoping their routines impress enough to put them through their qualifying head-to-head battle allowing them to compete in the finals for the viewers votes, and a chance to win £10,000, which will be used to help the club send gymnasts to International Competitions in the future.

For the Wakefield club, who saw their tumblers miss out on this prize during last weeks competition, the exposure from this show has been fantastic and to win the big prize would be the icing on the cake.

As with last week; Wakefield Gym Club is asking for you the British Gymnastic and the Gymnastics fraternity of Great Britain to help Wakefield Gym Club by voting for them to win the show.
