25th October - THE STARS COME OUT FOR GLASGOW AS OLYMPIC, EUROPEAN AND WORLD CHAMPIONS ARE HERE! FREE ADMISSION TO TODAY’S QUALIFIERS! DON’T MISS BETH, IMOGEN, RHIAN, MEL AND SHAVAHN AS THEY BATTLE FOR GOLD IN GLASGOW! It’s finally here, one of the highlights of the British Gymnastics Calendar as we welcome a star studded line up of gymnasts to the Glasgow Grand Prix and World Cup competition on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th October. And fantastic news for all gym fans as BG have announced there will be FREE ADMISSION TO TODAY’S QUALIFIERS FOR ALL as an amazing 24 nations from all 5 continents of the World will converge on Glasgow including Olympic, European and World Champions! In the Men’s competition, there is a superb line up of top names including an Olympic, European or World Cup Finals Champion or medalist on every piece of apparatus plus 3 time British All Around Champion Ross Brewer in front of his home fans! Ross will be joined by Louis Smith who won the Junior European Title on Pommels in 2004, and former British Champion David Eaton! The GB Women’s Team have been going from strength to strength with superb performances in particular from Imogen Cairns who won the All Around Title at the English Championships 9 day’s ago, and then won Bronze on Floor at last weekend’s World Cup DTB Event in Stuttgart and placed 4th on Vault! She will be joined by fan favourites, Beth Tweddle, Rhian Pugh, Mel Roberts and debutant for the GB Team Shavahn Church! this exciting young gymnast recently decided to compete for a spot on the GB Team as her parents hold dual US - British Nationality and her dynamic performances especially on Bars and Floor will be something special. Sadly a small foot injury will mean that Shavahn may only compete on Bars in Glasgow but with Beth and Rhian also on their speciality Bars, GB stand a great chance of medals in tomorrow night’s Finals! WORLD CLASS LINE UP FOR GLASGOW WORLD CUP! Pommel Horse - Marius Urzica ( Romania) - Sydney 2000 Olympic, World and European Champion, in what promises to be an enthralling battle with the 2005 European Champion Krisztian Berki of Hungary! Floor - A 3 way battle for Gold between Igor Vihtovs ( Latvia) Sydney 2000 Olympic Champion, Robert Gal ( Hungary) World Cup Final 2004, 2005 European Championships bronze medalist and Jeffrey Wammas from the Netherlands who won the American Cup Gold medal on floor and 2005 European bronze medalist on vault. Rings - Another Dutch Champion! Yuri Van Gelder 2004 World Cup Final Gold on Rings and 2005 European Champion, in a duel of European Champions on this piece with Alexander Safoshkin from Russia who was the 2003 European Champion, and 2004 World Cup Final bronze medalist. Vault - The 2000 Sydney Olympic Silver medalist Leszek Blanik from Poland and Robert Gal from Hungary , Sao Paulo World Cup Gold and 2005 European Championships bronze. P. Bars - Mitja Petkovsek from Slovakia favourite for Gold after winning the 2005 European bronze and World Cup Final Gold in 2004. High Bar - World Championships silver medalist in 2001 and Commonwealth Champion in 2002 Philippe Rizzo ( Aus) will be up against Aljaz Pegan from Slovakia who won the World Cup in 2002. In the Women’s Events, Great Britain’s Beth Tweddle will raise the roof when she enters the arena along with the other GB girls. GB go head to head against Alina Kozich from the Ukraine who was the European All-Around Champion in 2004, Verona Van de Leur who won the European bronze medal on Floor for Netherlands, plus Monette Russo who is the new Australian Champion. They are joined by the legendary Oksana Chussovitina from UZB who amazingly won the 1992 Olympic Title on vault, and later became the World Champion in 2003 on her speciality vault. It is fantastic to see her still competing at this level at almost 30 years of age, still setting the standards for others to follow. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to see new faces emerge in one of the last two major competitions before next month’s World Championships in Melbourne! In a fantastic gesture to the fans, Glasgow City Council, British Gymnastics and Scottish Gymnastics have announced that the audience can watch the Qualifying Events absolutely free on Tuesday 25th October!
