A new generation of US gymnasts will be competing at the Visa Championships from August 10-13th. This is the USA Championships for Men’s and Women’s Artistic, Rhythmic and National Team trials for Sports Acrobatics. It is the first major event in the preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and a host of new names are here to stake their claim for a spot on the US Olympic Team.

None of the Women’s Team who won Silver in Athens are competing, Carly Patterson is out with a back injury, Courtney Kupets and Terin Humphrey are now at College, Annia Hatch is coaching, and Mohini Bhardwaj & Courtney McCool are injured. Step forward a new generation including US Classic All Around Champion Nastia Liukin, US Classic Silver medalist Jana Bieger, 2004 World Cup Finals UB Champion Chellsie Memmel and 2004 World Cup Finals Vault Champion Alicia Sacramone.

In the Men’s Events, Blaine Wilson has just announced his retirement, Paul and Morgan Hamm are taking a break from gymnastics to resume their studies, and Jason Gatson and Brett McClure are recovering from injury. This means a major rebuilding of the Men’s Team who also won Silver in Athens 2004, and David Durante, Todd Thornton and David Sender are the favourites to win medals at this year’s Visa Championships.
