WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - WOMEN’S TUMBLING TEAM FINALS

16 September 2005

Disappointment for the British Team as they finished 4th in the World Finals tonight, after qualifying in 1st position. Only 3 gymnasts compete for each Team performing only one run. All scores count so nerves played a part and errors were heavily penalised, with only 8 completed runs out of 15 and a number of falls. With only three teams left to compete, Yulia Hall from the USA produced a solid run to give the USA a total of 91.70. Anna Korobeynikova from Russia then stepped up with a double straight through to double twisting double tuck to hit the highest individual score of the Finals with 35.20, and a team total of 96.60. GB were last to go and had looked favourites. Zoe MacLean produced the second highest individual score of the Finals with 33.50, but unfortunately Donna MacLean completed her final run of barani through to full twist, full twist through to full in pike, but fell to her back on her landing, reducing her score to 26.90. Samantha Palmer was also penalized for her earlier landing scoring 28.90. GB had performed brilliantly in qualifiers with Sam in 3rd place, Zoe 5th and Donna 12th, so were very unfortunate to finish in 4th place. Russia took the Gold Medals by a margin of almost 5 points, with USA winning Silver and France the bronze. Congratulations to all of the gymnasts involved.

Full scores appear below plus scores from qualifiers. Results from the Inividual Finals will appear tomorrow where Samantha Palmer and Zoe MacLean will compete in the World Finals. Good luck girls! We are proud of you all!

GB WIN QUALIFIERS IN WORLD TUMBLING CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Fantastic performances from the Great Britain team of Sarah Bellis, Donna Macean, Zoe MacLean and Samantha Palmer saw them qualify for Friday’s World Championships Team Finals in 1st place after some sensational performances in the Tumbling qualifiers. Kathryn Peberdy was unable to compete after her second operation to her foot last week, but saw a terrific team performance to tie with the Russian’s on 195.20 and qualify in first position due to the higher difficulty. Samantha Palmer competed in only her second competition after being out for over 12 months injured, and it is fantastic to see the former World Age Group and European Champion back on form, and qualify in third place in the individual event. Zoe MacLean was superb and finished in 5th place and also qualify for the Individual Finals, with Donna and Sarah in 12th and 13th positions with great performances. GB now lead the field into the World Championships Final! The USA finished in 3rd place with France and Ukraine also qualifying for the Team Finals.
