WOMENS GROUPS - RUSSIA WINS 2ND WORLD TITLE PLUS SILVER MEDAL IN WOMEN’S GROUPS!

1st - The Russian domination of the World Sports Acrobatics Finals continued as Elena Moiseeva, Elena Kirilova and Tatiana Alexeeva became the new Women’s Groups World Champions, and Russia also collected the Silver medals.

The 2005 European Senior Champions and 2005 World Games winners added their first World Chanpionships Title after an excellent balance received 29.102 with the Combined earning 28.750, and a total of 86.563. The Russians looked unstoppable as the the current World Champions Ekaterina Stroynova and Ekaterina Loginova with their new partner Albina Zinnurova also qualified in 2nd place. The Finals were dominated by the Eastern European nations as Ekaterina, Elena and Tatiana performed a beautiful combined routine to score 28.800 and claim the 2006 World Championships Women’s Groups Title.

The Silver medals went to Ekaterina Loginova, Ekaterina Stroynova and Albina Zinnurova from Russia in a fantastic World Championships Final.

Defending World Champions Loginova and Stroynova competed with their new partner Albina Zinnurova who made a fantastic attempt to retain their Title receiving the highest score in the Tempo routine in Qualifications with 28.750, and 28.589 in their Combined for a total of 85.994

The Finals were eagerly awaited as the current World Champions battled against the European Champions with just  0.161 separating the Russian Trios in their Combined routines as they headed to the World Championships Finals! Ekaterina Loginova, Ekaterina Stroynova and Albina Zinnurova performed a spectacular combined routine to earn another 28.589 and claim the Silver Medals position, but finish an agonising 0.22 short of winning their second successive World Championships Title!

Bronze medals were won by Maria Girut, Tatiana Motuz and Alina Starevich from Belarus. This was an opportunity for the 2005 European Championships Silver Medalists to gain victory over the Russian Trio of Elena Moiseeva, Elena Kirilova and Tatiana Alexeeva who narowly bear then in Thessaloniki at European’s. The Belarus trio scored 28.411 in Tempo and 28.252 in Combined but struggled in their balance routine qualifying in 5th position with a total of 84.267 behind the 2 sets of Russian and British groups.

Going into Finals, Maria, Tatiana and Alina demonstrated their beautiful technique to edge ahead of the other Finalist’s to win the bronze medals with a score of 28.302 and add the 2006 World Championships bronze medals to their already impressive record.

Anna Gorbatenko, Olena Nepytaeva & Olga Vorchuk from the Ukraine provided the surprise element in the Finals after only qualifying in 8th place with a total of 83.43, they leapt to 4th place with their Finals performance .

Their combined routine of 27.304 was the lowest scoring in Qualifications out of all the Finalist’s, but a much improved routine in the Finals was awarded 28.154 to put them into the 4th position.

Emily Collins, Victoria Lamkin & Leanne Turner from Great Britain have had a great build up to the Championships winning the 2006 Senior Women’s British Championships plus Silver Medals in the 2006 Lime Acro Cup in Germany. Emily, Vicki and Leanne were competing in their first World Championships as a trio and produced a superb performance.

The talented Spelthorne trio began excellently and opened with 27.800 for their Balance, and 28.360 for their Tempo with the combined routine earning 28.120, qualifying for the World Championships Finals in 4th place with a total of 84.280. Both GB Trios were pressing the Russian’s in Qualifications finishing in 3rd and 4th positions with a fantastic performance from the British gymnasts. Emily, Victoria and Leanne were awarded 28.070 for their combined routine in Finals, and the 5th position in the 2006 World Championships Women’s Groups Finals goes to Great Britain!  Well done girls!

Maria Henninger, Alysha Kidd & Tisa Penny from the USA won the 6th position in the World Championships Final with a fine performance where they finished in 6th Position in Qualifications with their Tempo routine earning 28.303 and a total of 84.154. Their combined routine in the Finals received 27.751 and the 6th position at World’s for the USA gymnasts.

7th position for Grace Blacklock, Claire-Louise Thompson and Erin Jameson from Great Britain. The Trio were making their Great Britain debut as a Trio and had already won Gold at the 2006 Flanders International Cup and bronze at the 2006 British Championships, in addition to Gold at the Freedom Cup in the USA last year.

A superb qualifying round performance saw the GB girls finish in 3rd place after scores of 28.07 in Balance, 28.24 in Tempo, and 28.13 in their Combined for a total of 84.440. Grace, Claire and Erin then received 27.580 in the Finals to finish in 7th place and mark a fine International debut for the Harrow girls.

Maaike Croket, Soen Geirnaert & Corrine Van Hombeeck from  Belgium finished in 8th position in the World Championships Finals after scoring 26.910.

All of the Finals were a great testament to the gymnasts’s ability to perform at a World Championships which were also being televised for the first time in the sport’s history.
